Phantom Moon | 幻月

2020 | Mixed Media Installation

The installation combines different media and concepts, portraying perspective by constructing the illusion of space. Phantom Moon is a three channel video installation on transparent veils with atmospheric audio. The space is mainly composed of veils. Figures are blurred out as people move through the veils, perception of the depth of space becomes obscured. Raised slightly above the ground, the 2 x 1 m long veils hang irregularly from the ceiling with minimal hanging system.

The installation draws on an Asian folktale, The Monkey and the reflection of the Moon, in which a band of monkeys attempt to reach for the reflection of the moon by forming a chain from the branch of a tree, eventually it breaks off and all the monkeys fall into the well.

The reflection of the moon is both illusive and elusive. An illusion that would disappear when the water is touched, Fixated on a misperception which will not lead anywhere, should we hold on or is it time to let go?
