Setting Up for Open Studio

Studio Space Plan

Potential Setup:

  • Install makeshift walls for projections

  • Cover up lift door with white paper

  • 3 projections, one at each corner

  • One big one with sound

  • One corner can have the fabric or transparent film

  • *Consider position of projector (affect projection)*

First Sketch:

Considering leaving the table as it is for the open studio.

Might remove table for final studio presentation.

*Since it is necessary to show works in progress, might have to leave the table and have the other projection elsewhere

I tried remaking some animated shapes so that the projectors can be on the floor, however they would turn out so differently each time. The audio I have would not match. I will have to have the projectors all at different height depending on the batch they were made.

Considering preserving my work desk, along with the photographs on it and on the wall.

Second Sketch

I was suggested to show my video documentations with the old TVs or flat-screen TVs.

Setting Up:

As every slight change in the angle of the projector will change the perspective of the geometric shapes, all the projections had to be readjusted once the position of the projector was set. Tested the videos looping on the screen with the Raspberry Pis. There were slight audio-video stuttering occasionally, even after compressing the video files. This might be because of the cables or loose USB, as they would usually work when they were reset. Had to reorganize cables for safety and to maintain functionality of the devices.

For the bigger TV below, I planned to have a still image of the actual corner and wall behind it displayed on screen. As there were no suitable cables available to connect the TV and a Raspberry Pi, we decided to use a DVD player. However, since the format of the burned files were not recognized by the player, I just had the TV static playing for the open studio. For the final studio presentation, I would have to either burn another disc or get a Scart to HTMI cable for the TV.

Had the transparent fabric hung up at the corner where the main projection will be to show both the original and distorted form of the animations. Though the fabric added movements and variations, the corner projections became less visible. I will have to reconsider if I should leave it on for the final studio presentation.

I will have to rearrange the photos on the wall and have them on the desk. The current display confuses the viewers as some people assumed they act as a bridge, connecting the old photographs and charcoal drawings on the desk to the blue projections. For the final studio presentation, I will have to reconsider certain arrangements to give a clearer context of the works.
