Abstract

There is a common misconception that there is a

correspondence between the representation (art) and the represented. Artworks can be used to interpret the

strangeness of reality by estranging the everyday. French Philosopher, Jacques Rancière stated that “The real must be fictionalized in order to be thought” (2004). Fiction allows artists to make commentaries on life, on regular occurrences so taken for granted that they have retreated to the subconscious, such as the complex relationship of fiction and memories and the concept of identity. This study examines how artists use fictional realities to challenge our perception of the notion of reality.
