Lesson Learned
Through the course of writing these blog posts, I have gained a better understanding of artworks and social and cultural contextual theories. It can take up to two days to complete a single blog post, but the weekly deadline pushes and motivates me to start earlier so that it will be completed in time. I would usually go through the content of my sources and would look for further evidence to support the arguments stated if they were not well elaborated. I have not only learned to evaluate the credibility of online sources but also how to effectively summarize information gathered to support an argument.
The Benefits of Critical Writing
Critical writing is important in developing and strengthening a certain standpoint, perspective or argument. Critical writing requires analyzing and evaluating other reliable sources for information and evidence that supports the argument. Instead of merely quoting lines from the sources, regardless of books or videos, we have to identify the validity and credibility of the publisher, author and consider the relevance based on the time it was published. We are encouraged to find out the correlation between different theories and ideas to create a substantiated conclusion.
Which blog post would I rewrite?
If I had to rewrite a blog post, it would be the most recent one, which is blog 9. I had less time to complete this blog post as I spent a lot of time going through other artists, narrowing them down and pick an artwork that interests me among many of their renowned works of art. Knowing that this blog post is a part of the second assignment: Analysis of Contemporary artwork, I had the presentation and the final thesis in mind which made it harder to decide on a topic, in this case a specific art of an artist. After much consideration and long contemplation between Rachel Whiteread and Bill Viola, I finally decided on Bill Viola's Five Angels for the Millennium. I am glad that I have found many reliable sources on this specific installation, however with the abundance of information gathered made it harder to summarize all the important points effectively. I realized later on in the class discussion that I omitted certain relevant information I thought I had included as I went through them so many times. If I were to redo this blog again, I would like to organize the main points better and elaborate more on certain points and examples. Thankfully, this is in a way an abstract of the final thesis, I could still improve the general structure of the whole analysis.
