THE IMMERSIVE ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE AND THE EXPLOITATION OF SPACE
Bonnie Mitchell ( 2010 )
The academic paper by Bonnie Mitchell discussed the how the manipulation of both virtual and physical space enable artists to create immersive and interactive environments that allow audience to experience an alternative reality.
Fascination with fabricated reality has always been a part of the human psyche. In the mid 20th century, due to technological limitations, most of the attempts to construct reality remained "concept art". Myron Krueger who pioneered "Artificial Reality", rejected physical object created interactive and responsive environment with computer-mediated space. Although he was rejected by the art community at the time who applauded Allan Kaprow for rejecting physical objects in art, he paved the road for many digital artists today in blurring the division between fiction and reality by creating virtual worlds that are indistinguishable from real spaces. Human perception of reality depends eminently on the sensory perception. Contemporary artists took advantage of the psychological apparatus and constructed worlds that enables audience to escape to alternate realms and have an authentic sensory and emotional experience. Digital technology lead artists to moved away from encumbered experience that interferes with sensory perception creating unconventional immersive art that uses the human body as the interface. Technology has expanded the canvas of artists enabling the manipulation of not only physical but virtual place to for experiencing alternate realities.

VR AND AR: THE ART OF IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING AND JOURNALISM
Emory Craig and Maya Georgieva ( 2018 )
The article discusses how virtual and augmented reality will transform storytelling as we move into the world of immersive technologies.
A virtual reality environment creates a sense of presence in an environment, thus transforms the immersive storytelling experience of participants. At this early stage of virtual reality as an art form, the future of immersive art is beyond imagination. Journalism students tried to induce empathy through the exploration of 360-degree videos, virtual reality while Media and Arts students experimented with nonlinear stories, games, virtual reality, and immersive theater. Virtual reality is a novel medium for immersive storytelling through an ongoing conversation with cultures looking for new ways to understand themselves ( Craig and Geogieva, 2018 ).
"In the future, you will be the character. The story will happen to you." - Chris Milk
This article uncovered the use of Virtual Reality and its potential as a space for this creative process and storytelling. Art is afterall not just about skills and aesthetics but a visual language to convey stories, sharing experience, emotions and perspectives. Alternative reality has given audience an opportunity to fully immerse in the virtual world, be part of the story and gain better understanding of it.

VIRTUAL ART: A TENDENCY IN CONTEMPORARY ART
Inês Albuquerque, Teresa Almeida ( 2012 )
The paper introduced the historical fundaments of virtual art and its characteristics in the context of contemporary art.
Contemporary art would not have become what it is if it was not for Marcel Duchamp's overwhelmingly new conceptual approaches to art, breaking away from traditional concepts. In addition to Duchamp's artistic contribution, technological development have allowed virtual art to be explored. As virtuality eventually became a tendency in digital art, artists and audiences are able to explore alternate realms, experiencing the self and its relationship with reality and beyond. In the works of virtual art, artists from different corners of the world are able to collaborate with the existence of multidisciplinary work teams and shared authorship. Technology have allowed the development of new ideas and concepts as well as the creation of virtual art.
Although this paper does not focus specifically on virtual and augmented reality nor the immersion of art, it discuss the development of virtual art and it's increasing dominance in the field of art, that lead to the immersive technological art today.

IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON ART
UKEssays ( 2013 )
Technology has increasing influence and impact on the modern art industry, expanding the canvas of artists through digital mediums.
The advancement of technology is redefining art, modern artists are constantly experimenting with not only traditional mediums but also new ways of incorporating digital technology into their works. Videos, films and installations have become become more dominant in the contemporary art, with galleries dedicated to these mediums. Furthermore, the use of virtual space are increasingly being used by artists to not only display, but sell their works. Computer artists have extended beyond videos, video games to three dimensional images and interactive installations. Yet, digital art are considered lesser form of art by many who believes that the computer is the one producing the works forgetting that since the Renaissance era, artists have had their assistant preparing parts of the artwork, or even finishing it.
"The computer is very much like an apprentice… Since the master (the programmer or artist) does not have to be present for many of these operations, it seems as if the computer is acting in place of the artist. We have again found our scientist-artist, and it is the computer itself. "
Through this essay, the author stresses the impact of technological advancement on contemporary art, giving readers a further insight on the misconception about digital art as art. This is an important argument as many doubts virtual and augmented reality as authentic art due to digital manipulations instead of physical craftsmanship.
