Reflecting on VR

Virtual Reality in Visual Arts | Tina Sauerlaender

This week I attended a lecture at the The Institute of Intermedia (IIM) by Tina Sauerlaender about virtual reality in visual arts. Sauerlaender is the co-founder of RadianceVR.co, an online platform for artistic VR experiences, and MiRAA.org, an online education platform for VR and AR in the arts, recently she also started curating VR works to be exhibited in gallery spaces. Interested in the digital impact on society, she believes that VR is here to stay this time after its many rises and falls and works to create platforms for people to better understand the possibilities of the media.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to learn more about the rising media that I have began to dabble in myself. The talk was more of an introduction to the history of immersive experience and the development of virtual reality as an artistic medium, some of which we had learned. Sauerlaender mentioned that most artists used to work with different mediums before and have just recently begun working creatively with VR as they are able to challenge the concept of reality. However, most artist who attempted to incorporate VR into the gallery space merely recreated a physical version of the objects that exist in the virtual space or vice versa.

Looking back at the artworks she presented to us, they reminded me of some of the works my peers have created. I have no intention of making light of anyone's works, I really do appreciate the 3D environments and visuals that expresses the artists imagination or creating an virtual version of the real world with the spherical camera with 360-degree lens. Despite the fact that many believes that the immersive technology will eventually become ubiquitous, I sometimes wondered about the extend of immersion and interactivity in the virtual world and dissociation from the physical world. As much as I am interested in the creation of alternative virtual realms, perhaps we should not neglect the possibilities in the "real world" as well.

Exercise:

It has been a while since I took any photos. I recently tried photographing through a translucent bottle which I accidentally distorted with hot water. I really like the eerie effects it gives, the red and the warped background.

I also visited some galleries along with the second year students, below is the link to my documentations of the visits : https://sherlynntan1.wixsite.com/lost-art/copy-of-vc
